Beyond knowing how to calculate cubic feet and square footage is just as important as knowing when to do which. A cubic foot is a proper way to measure a shipping container, while the square footage of a room is the proper measurement system for those. As most rooms are square or rectangle in shape, you can measure their square footage by multiplying length times width. For shipping containers, one cubic foot is a measurement that determines a space that is one foot long by one foot wide by one foot high. Calculating cubic feet in a particular area means you will need to measure and multiply the length by the width by the height of the space.
Planning Your Shipment
Most shipments will be boxed, stacked on a wooden base, and wrapped in plastic shrink-wrap or protective shipping material. Once the items are stacked, the length, width, and height of the shipment will be measured from its highest point and widest point.
Measuring your items in this manner will give you an estimate of the amount of space needed for your next shipment, so you can choose the ideal shipping container dimensions for you.
